Q: Who invented Scrabble?
A: The game was patented by James Brunot of Newton, Connecticut in 1948. The source of his patent was a game called Criss-Cross, in which players had to make up crosswords on a piece of cardboard using wooden letters. Criss-Cross was invented in 1931 by Brunot's architect friend, Alfred Butts, to keep himself amused after losing his job in the depression. But the games final rules, and each letter's value, based on its frequency of use, took Butts almost a decade to refine. By 1953, over a million sets had been sold. Scrabble has been translated into half a dozen languages and issued in a Braillic version for the blind.
