Negroponte starts by explaining that the success blockbuster (a video rental shop) is the prove needed to show that pay-per-view works. When we borrow VHS tapes or VCDs, we pay rental fees for the movies/programs we want to watch. Renting atoms, as he puts it. Part of the thrill of renting a movie is the idea of browsing through a wide selection and finding something you like. But once our digital life comes true, the choices will be infinite. The best part about it is that we wont tire ourselves and it will be much easier to find something we like.
In Negropontes world, he dreams of going home to a talking VCR. One that has its own mind and idea of what he would like to watch and record it for him. Of course, bits of keywords would be needed.
