Bitcasting
Negroponte talks about TVs in this chapter. How Japan first came up with a solution to make pictures on screen look so much better. The Europeans, not to be left behind, came up with their own version. The Americans took their time and came up with something way better than analog - digital.
"Being digital is the license to grow. In the onset, you need not dot every I and cross every T. You can build hooks for future expansion and develop protocols.."
Things do seem to be getting better. Just when you think you have the latest and best technology at home, think again. Just with TV alone, we have so many choices, what more with other stuff. Another thing with TV, when something new comes out and you decide you want it, you have to buy the whole thing again. Unlike with computers, when new programs or games or computer peripherals are introduced, all you have to do is add it. You do not have to buy a new unit. You just keep on improving what you have.
Negroponte also shares what will happen when television is digital. We will have more choices, and actually, more control.
